Plan the daily life, not only the admission.

For an Indian student, a comfortable start depends on practical decisions made before the flight: where to live, what to budget, which documents to carry and what work rules actually apply.

Accommodation and money

Make the first month predictable.

Ask the school what housing assistance exists, then compare actual rental terms, location, transport time, deposits and house rules. Do not transfer money based only on a listing or an unverified contact. Keep a budget for tuition, housing, food, transport, phone service, insurance and an emergency buffer; individual costs vary considerably.

Keep these ready

  • Offer and enrolment instructions from the institution
  • Passport and the documents specified for immigration formalities
  • Confirmed accommodation address and arrival plan
  • A working payment method and emergency contacts
  • Current school guidance on medical checks and insurance

Arrival sequence

Follow the school's and ICA's instructions.

ICA says a foreigner accepted as a full-time matriculated or registered student at a listed Institute of Higher Learning generally needs a Student's Pass, unless an applicable exemption applies. The application and any later in-person or school-arranged formalities follow the official process. Requirements can depend on the student's status and institution.

Keep the institution's registration instructions, ICA correspondence and required documents together. Do not assume that an in-principle approval alone guarantees entry or the final pass.

Work while studying

Eligibility is conditional, not automatic.

Singapore's Ministry of Manpower says Student's Pass holders may work only when its conditions are met. During term time, eligible full-time students at listed institutions may work up to 16 hours a week without a separate work pass, or complete a qualifying institution-run industrial attachment or internship. Vacation rules differ, and exchange students are not covered by the same exemption. Check the current institution list and full conditions before accepting work.

After studies, a Student's Pass is not a post-study work guarantee. If a graduate needs a work pass, the employer normally applies under the relevant pass rules. We advise families to plan a viable education budget without assuming a job.
